About CLUE

Linux is a new and exciting microcomputer operating system based on an old minicomputer OS that is solid. Since Linux's start in 1991 the GNU/Linux OS and related programs have come to rival those by Microsoft and Apple and much of which was done by guys who wanted to share. This Linux users group is also based on this open community, a sharing point for information and concepts on Linux
learn and discuss Linux currently we meet as an informal gatherings where like minds congregate. As well as on a mailing list.
What is Linux?Linux (or more appropriately GNU/Linux), is a computer operating systems and applications similar to Windows or Mac OS which can run on ordinary PCs or Macs. It's very advanced in that it supports modern concepts like the internet and networking, as well as much of it being free to copy, to use and to examine, which makes it a great learning tool and very useful.
There are more pages on my site which better describe GNU/Linux, you can learn more by starting here.
Why use Linux? There are many reasons, some have grown tired of is the "buy this to fix that" runaround with much of today's software. Much of GNU/Linux is developed as "free/open-source" software there are no haves and have-nots. Not only that, many of these applications that run on linux are top-notch and give us a chance to access professional grade tools without the high costs.
Many are interested in learning to do more with computers and can't always afford the programming languages or server software necessary on other platforms. Linux can be its own high-end server and the programming languages and tools that developed Linux are also included along with the source code of those programs for others to adapt, use and learn from.
Lastly whenever people buy something cool to show off to others it usually ended with, "I paid $xxx for it, if you want to get it." With much of GNU/Linux being free (as in beer), we not only only can demonstrate these programs but also pass them along too.
When and where are the Meetings, what's going to go on at the meetings?Don't know when or exactly where yet, I'm trying to get a few of us together to start meetings. They will be in San Andreas though, which has many places that would be great for meetings and is pretty easy to get to. (and of course, that's where I live)
I hope to have a demonstrations at each meeting exploring one or two applications of GNU/Linux, work on solving problems of group members and small lessons on the skills/knowledge we bring to the group. Including one of my favorite things, programming.
Do I Have to be Using Linux to Attend? No. we do have a few popular Linux distributions including ones that you can run from a CD drive without installing. These will be freely available to anyone, and I hope to help those interested in running Linux with getting their computer running happily with it. For those who want to just see what Linux is all about you are more than welcome too, some of the concepts like programming, networking and using office tools can be appplied to other computers.
If you are looking for specifically Windows or Macintosh answers, there is a PC (Windows) Group and a Macintosh Group in the county that can help you more.
So where do I start?Call or Email me, Larry Anderson at (209) 754-1262 or larry@portcommodore.com we'll start there and I'll add you to my contact/mailing list and start sharing information.
