Linux Community and News:
- Linux.org - The Linux site, learn about linux from the people who develop it.
- GNU - which stands for GNU is Not Unix. Where Linux develops a Unix like operating system, GNU is the spearhead for developing Unix compatible applications that can run under Linux or Unix, etc. GNU also predates Linux by several years, these combined efforts of these projects as well as many others is what has helped Linux become what it is today. Here you can also find resources on learning about what Free Software (there are two meanings) is all about.
- Slashdot: News for Nerds/Stuff that matters - This is probably the most popular Web Log (Blog) site for nerdworthy news and discussion. Many topics of interest to nerds (with Linux being in a good majority) range from cyber culture, legal issues, scientific discoveries, theoretical news, the latest gadgets, Politics and Law as it relates to technology. Every posted story is open for discussion, which can turn into something more livelier then the news item. It is a good place to get a fresh perspective on current events.

- Distro Watch - A distribution tracking site which keeps an up to date database on many Linux Distributions, what audience they are geared for and what versions of software are contained within them.
Open Source Projects and Information
- SourceForge - from the site: "SourceForge.net is the world's largest
Open Source software development website, with the largest repository of Open Source code and applications available on the Internet. SourceForge.net provides free services to Open Source developers." Sourceforge lists thousands of open source projects currently in development or planning. Platforms/languages are not limited to linux, there are open source projects for Mac, Windows, even the Commodore 64! If you are wondering what out there is available in open source, this is a good place to start. If you are a budding programmer looking for some example code to learn from, this, again, is an excellent place to start.
- SchoolForge - Similar in concept to SourceForge but focusing on school and education based open source projects. A recommended site for cash strapped educators to find resources without strings attached.
- - OpenOffice.org - One of the shining examples of the FOSS development is Open Office, an office suite on the same level as Microsoft Office, Word Perfect Office, AppleWorks, and other office suites. Open office includes advanced Word Processor, Spread Sheet and Presentation tools (all with a very high degree of file compatibility with Microsoft Office, as well as a drawing program, and database. OOo is available for a wide variety of computer platforms such as Linux, Windows, MacOSX, etc. and supports hundreds of languages.
- - Mozilla Web Applications Before there was Internet explorer there was Mosaic, the first web browser, over the years Mosaic advanced and developed into Netscape (which was about when Microsoft entered the browser market with Internet Explorer. As Internet Explorer has aged these past few years, Netscape kept on developing and innovating to become Mozilla. The Mozilla Internet application include a browser, email, website editor, chat and calendar applications. Most of which are on par if not better then what Microsoft has to offer (and also available for more computer operating systems than just Windows). Check out Mozilla, many security sites are suggesting it for windows users as it does a better job of addressing day to day security issues then IE does.
- eGroupwareThis project - eGroupware is an FOSS enterprise-wide group management system. Designed to be a open standard replacement to other management programs like Microsoft Project. Egroupware is available and designed to run on a Linux based PC with FOSS support applications and run as a web-based suite rescuing the technical management overhead of the enterprise.
- Asterisk - Open Source PBX - Even the world of telephony is being looked at by the open source community, with the Asterisk project to create an integrated call center using open source software and readily available commodity hardware.
- WikiPedia - Not every Open Source project is about software and Programming, Wikipedia is a community written open-source Encyclopedia. With well over 500,000 articles on a wide variety of subjects under peer review and updating by the community it is probably one of the best reference tools on the Internet. It also has a very good front page that links the contents with current events or similar dates in history.
